We are an active and vital department where more than 25% of the Davidson College student body participates in our offerings each semester by taking classes, performing in our ensembles, and taking private instrumental and voice lessons.
If you are interested in music, you do not have to major or minor in music to take private lessons, participate in ensembles, or study with our outstanding scholar-teachers.
Majoring in Music The Major in Music allows students to immerse themeselves in the study of music, either as an integral part of their experience in a liberal-arts college, or as preparation for graduate studies in music.
Minoring in Music The Minor in Music allows students who wish a broad introduction to the study of music while participating in the college's ensembles or taking applied lessons.
Performance The numbers speak for themselves: almost 200 Davidson students participate each semester in one or more of the Music Department ensembles, student organized chamber groups, or solo recitals.
Scholarships We offer merit music performance scholarships by audition to all students, regardless of their prospective majors. Based upon audition materials submitted, approximately 10 to 15 students are invited to the campus to compete for five merit scholarships, each of which awards $8,000 annually plus the cost of private lessons.
Curriculum We are a department where students who love the art of music can further their knowledge through a wide variety of course offerings ranging from the traditional music theory, composition and history courses, to courses in jazz, world music, and film music. For a complete detailed listing, please see the online course catalog.
