Mathematics Activities

Come join us!

Keep tabs on what is popping up to do in the Math Department! You can be a part of it all, connecting with other students interested in math and learning topics outside the classroom.

The hub of mathematical activity at Davidson College is the Bernard Society of Mathematics, which brings together math majors, minors, as well as other students with strong mathematical interests. A variety of events occur throughout the year, including the annual Bernard Lecture, presented by a prominent mathematician. Below is a list of other activities that fill the calendar.

Math Coffees

Students, faculty and visiting guests present their mathematical work in the department series called Math Coffees. While pancakes have been served at a Math Coffee (before a talk on computing with bacteria to solve a pancake problem), paradoxically, there is seldom coffee--although soft drinks often appear! Math Coffees offer a time to connect with each other over snacks and learn about new mathematical explorations.

Compete in a Contest or Competition

There are a variety of local and national competitions in mathematics. Some come with very large prizes! After all your studying, tune up your mathematical mind and compete in a contest. Pictured to the right is a math-biology team as they celebrate winning gold at a synthetic bio competition.

Math Hall activities

The open space outside the faculty offices in the Math Department is often referred to as "Math Hall" and is where students are frequently found studying and discussing mathematics. Math-related activities happen too. For instance, we celebrate Pi Day, singing songs about the famous irrational digit, applying pi tattoos, submitting Pi-kus (a poem based in haikus but with math-y alterations), and eating pies, of course!

Attend a conference

Students frequently attend conferences. Some present talks or posters on topics they have researched within the department. Others participate in Math Jeopardy competitions with students from other institutions. Conferences offer a time to meet people, create memories, hear math talks, and see new places.

Movies, murder, and more

The officers of the Bernard Society plan a variety of events throughout the year which have included movie outings, math murder mysteries, and game nights. There are also the fall and spring picnics that offer time for hanging out with fellow students.

This list is only partial. Read about student job opportunities to learn how to be a course assistant or tutor. Help with the various outreach activities of the faculty and students to encourage mathematical interest and talent in the area.
