Lou Ortmayeris Charles A. Dana Professor of Political Science. He received his B.A. from Yale University and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the Graduate School of International Studies, University of Denver. Ortmayer has also studied at Bonn and Cologne Universities in Germany, and conducted field research in that country, the former GDR and Poland. He has been heavily involved in a case teaching and case writing program as a Pew Faculty Fellow in International Affairs through the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. Ortmayer teaches courses on American Foreign Policy, International Politics, European Politics, the European Union, Russia and Post-Soviet Politics, and Politics and Film. He has written and published case studies widely in U.S. foreign policy, on topics such as the US-Japan FSX Fighter Conflict, South Africa Sanctions, Deciding to Intervene in Bosnia, and the Fall of Margaret Thatcher, among others. He researched and published earlier on German-Polish Relations, East-West trade conflicts, the U.S. and NAFTA, and German political economy. Ortmayer has received the Hunter-Hamilton Love of Teaching Award (1999), the ODK Teaching Award (1983), and the Thomas Jefferson faculty award (1989) at Davidson College, and he was also the C.A.S.E. North Carolina Professor of the Year in 1993.
